Two Kinds of Scores in the Grade Book
  • 70% Learning Goals: Demonstrating what you've learned from our 15 goals is the main part of our grade. These are graded based on level of proficiency rather than a percentage of answers correct. Whatever level of proficiency you're at can be revised to show improvements to your learning.
  • 20% Participation: Your participation in activities that are part of the process of learning are part of your grade as part of your ability to perform important skills, such as whether you're prepared, engaged, completing tasks on time, etc. Any assignments, activities, or evaluations of your performance that are not directly assessing your learning of the 15 goals will go into this category.
  • 10% Final Exam: A non-revisable exam covering the material from this quarter's learning goals. Multiple choice.

The Four Tier Scale
Each learning goal will appear as an assignment grade in the grade book. These scores can be revised and the percentage that you currently have represents the level you're at rather than a percentage of points earned. Below is a document with a detailed breakdown of what each "level" of proficiency entails. Below that you'll see a more simple chart showing which level corresponds to each percentage. It is possible to get half levels by partially demonstrating the next level's requirements, such as Level 3.5 is 95%, Level 2.5 is 85% and Level 0.5 is 60%.

Level 4
Advanced learning beyond the target goal.
100% in the grade book
Level 3
Proficient: Understands the essential target learning goal.
90% in the grade book
Level 2
Progressing: Understands part of the essential target learning goal.
80% in the grade book
Level 1
Beginning: With help, can demonstrate success at level 2 & 3 content.
70% in the grade book
Level 0
Even with help, no success with demonstrating understanding of learning goal.
50% in the grade book

Missing Scores
A past-due missing learning goal score will not go in as a zero but will be entered as an Incomplete (INC) and will cause your entire grade to be INC until it is done. Missing participation scores can be made up but are entered as a 0% until done.

Revising your Learning Goal Scores
As we progress through each learning goal, there will be opportunities for you to learn and practice each goal through reading, discussion and activities. If you don't score as high as you wish to on one, study the parts you missed and then see me. There are follow-up remediation tasks that can be done to show your improved learning of the goal. If your errors were extensive then you'll likely have to start over with a new evaluation of some sort. If your errors were minor then you may be able to simply fix or explain the parts you missed.

Time Limits for Revision
After you get a learning goal test back you'll have a week to begin making revisions.

Engagement Grade
Everyone starts at 90% for each of these grades. Do more than the minimum to move up, less than the minimum to move down.

Minimum Expected for Engagement

Be prepared, attentive to what's going on, and respectful to others.
Examples of Doing more than the minimum

Pose relevant questions, volunteer answers during discussion, respond constructively to the comments of others.
Examples of doing less than the minimum

Being inattentive such as through working on other things, playing with cell phone, head down, and/or being disrespectful to others.-5% for each incident after being warned.
